DENIM ROAD-TEST: 5EP
Class-Act Jonny Abrahams Braves The Hardest Test Of All
Actor Jonny Abrahams, whose career began 10 years ago when he starred in Larry Clark’s “Kids,” has just about hit the big time. The 28-year-old New Yorker who many would remember as the cute science teacher on Boston Public, is kicking back in The Terrace Suite at New York’s Maritime Hotel (complete with outdoor shower), feet on the coffee table, hip-hop blaring from the radio, describing the treatment for a TV comedy he co-wrote with good pal Ashton Kutcher. And he’s still beaming from the night before, in which -- all dapperly suited up in custom threads -- he strolled the red carpet and partied at the Four Seasons for the premiere of “Prime,” a film he co-stars in alongside Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep.
Not surprisingly, the free designer duds have started rolling in. “Check these out,” he says, putting a pair of Gucci high-tops on the side table for display. “How dope are they?” Equally awesome is the black leather, butter-soft Gucci leather jacket that’s slung over the back of the couch. Paired with a black fedora he had custom-made at Baron Hats in L.A, Abrahams has that designer-does-gangster look down.
Yet, for all the fine-looking clothes in his wardrobe, Abrahams still rocks (“every day of my life”) four grungy pairs of Diesel jeans he bought too long ago to remember. “All I know is that they started out dark,” he says, sadly looking down at the baby blue jeans he’s sporting with a pair of construction boots and a lambswool sweater from Club Monaco.
Knowing that Abrahams has a thing for classic 1940s-style clothing, we tossed him a pair of 5EP jeans, which are co-designed by a former Ralph Lauren RRL jeans designer and a bike customizer and inspired by the work wear of yore:
So, what do you think of them?
I’m psyched about them. I’ve never owned a pair of jeans that cost more than $100. I love these. The cut is perfect – straight, but loose. I’ve needed a pair like these for a long time. They’re real dude’s jeans. (He gets up, dons his fedora, and starts strutting around the suite.) They’re also really comfortable and have a nice ‘denim density.’ And it’s cool that there are no loud logos. You’re gonna see me years from now and be like ‘Is he still wearing those 5EP’s?!’
What do you think of the ‘Dark Worn’ wash?
They have that greenish cast, which – I don’t know – is that from bike grease or something that happens to ironworkers? It’s fine - I’m cool with it. But, to be honest, I prefer a cleaner wash that’s not distressed.
Where are you planning on wearing them?
I’m just chillin’ tonight. Gonna get some sushi with friends downstairs at Matsuri. Not sure, maybe have a little party in the suite. But wait ‘til I get back to L.A…
