Mak Daddy
Steve Aoki Picks the Next Big Bands

“I’m into music that makes you pee in your pants,” says Steve Aoki, who by day is the ringleader of indie-rock label Dim Mak Records (which turned bands like Bloc Party and The Kills into big names), and by night the much-sought-after DJ Kid Millionaire. “Music that’s bigger than music. Music you fall into, that generates raw human emotion.”

Like usual, Aoki is speaking a mile a minute – spewing superlatives and excitement about not just music, but also his new Dim Mak custom clothing label. “I love dinosaurs,” he exclaims of his chosen icon, which covers the first batch of unisex tees and sweatshirts. “And color!”

Somehow, amidst all the Red Bull-fused raging at The Winter Music Conference in Miami last week, we managed to contain Aoki for a bit, to discuss who he believes are the Next Big Things in music. Speaking from The Cardoza Hotel (“It’s Gloria Estefan’s place – it’s great!”) here’s what he had to say:

“There’s this new artist from France called Uffie. It’s a girl. She sings like Roxanne Roxanne from the old-school hip-hop days -- that style of rap/electro/indie/dance-y over fast beats. She performed at my Tuesday night party at Cinespace in L.A. Then I saw her again at South by Southwest. She’s gorgeous. She’s an 18-year-old princess, performing with 2 Live Crew! Awesome!

“Mickey Avalon is from L.A. He’s a Jewish rapper, but his audience is indie kids. He’s amazing! Great lyricist.

“There’s this band from Nashville called Be Your Own Pet. They’re all under 20 years old. It’s one girl, three guys. They’re kinda like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

“White Rose Movement. They’re playing Coachella. They’re fucking unbelievable. From England. Dance-y, high-energy, upbeat.

“Annie – I love her. I’m doing a single with her that Junior Sanchez is re-mixing. He’s my favorite producer!

Oh, there’s this band JR Ewing – they’re from Norway. I love Norwegians!”

“Scanners. They’re from England. Fucking unbelievable sound! Beautiful melodies. It’s a girl singer -- I love female vocalists, if you haven’t noticed. She sounds like PJ Harvey -- really soft and really pretty.

“More girls… Pony Up! It’s four girls from Montreal. They’re a really cute girl pop band. They sing about being girls. I love them -- they’re great.
