My Town: Sydney
Going Buck Wild Down Under With Tsubi’s Dan Single

Ever since Tsubi launched in Sydney in 2001 with a runway show that included a pack of live rats (g’day!), the label with a leaning towards graphic tees and skinny grey jeans has generated worldwide buzz. Much of that has to do with the co-directors -- Dan Single and George Gorrow -- who blow into Sydney, New York, and L.A. like Tasmanian Devils, kicking up storms of loud music and liquor, and sucking in fans like Kate Moss and Madonna.

Here, “Dangerous Dan,” as Single likes to call himself (his e-mail signature also identifies him as “a really important guy”), divulges where the good times roll in his hometown of Sydney. It ranges from a cop show on TV to a Melbourne club. In his own words:

The Bang Gang. Friday nights at Club 77. It’s wild. Buck wild!

Icebergs restaurant in Bondi. Posh fancy Italian food, but the best part is the impeccable service from 'the boss' Maurice Terzini and his staff. Everyone needs good STAFF. Also check out Maurice's new restaurant on the other end of Bondi Beach. It’s North Bondi Italian Food, and it’s great, cheaper Italian food -- always busy, and right on the beach. Bellisimo!

Check out Fat, a shop on Oxford Street. Lots of cool young labels, and Australian stuff. Also down the road on Glenmore Rd., there’s a Tsubi store and a bunch of cool little shops around there.

Kinokuniya is a bookshop on Pitt St. It’s on the corner of the Victoria Galleries. It’s crazy the amount and the quality of books in there – it’s like every good bookshop in the world rolled into one.

Check out Chinatown. There’s lots of good junk in the Paddy’s Market building. Also, the Golden Century restaurant is great. And also, BBQ King for duck pancakes and yum cha.

Modular party is once a month at The Basement.

Honky Tonks, a club in Melbourne.

Newtown is a student-style town with lots of good vintage stores.

Go out on a boat in the harbour. That’s real nice.

Find a TV series called Blue Murder. It’s the background to our corrupt police force. Great Aussie television!

Other places to visit: Palm Beach, Byron Bay, West Australia outback, private beaches… Also, the private islands in Queensland are supposed to be amazing.
