Slim Chance
The Problem with Men in Skinny Jeans -- and William Eadon's Solution

Designer William Eadon knows that guys are feeling skinnier silhouettes. He sees them all: gay, straight, uptown-trying -to-be-downtown, all squished into slim-jim jeans. And, like many, he's not crazy about how it looks. “They’re just so tight – tight everywhere. Your shit’s all out there.”

His solution: the “Cigarette” trouser jean. Cut from raw Japanese denim, the classic, tab-front pants hang loose around the waist and rear, and narrow in at the knees. They’re a dressier, more civilized variation of the drainpipe trend; and, for modesty’s sake, they even possess a swatch of fabric stitched into the back that acts as a butt-crack protector. “I’ve seen other people’s butt-cracks, and I’m like, ‘Oh man, is that what I look like?’” he explains, still laughing at the odd yet semi-genius idea.

Not that Eadon -- a 34-year-old Ohio native who looks like Tommy Chong (“I get Jesus Christ, too”) and works as a part-time fashion design teacher at Parsons -- isn’t odd and semi-genius himself. He was, after all, one of two guys behind Imitation of Imitation of Christ (IOIOC) – a collection of scribbled-on, recycled clothes, indistinguishable from those of Tara Subkoff’s high-and-mighty label. He also designed a well-loved women’s line, until he got sick of having seamstresses “all up in the bedroom,” and burnt out of boxing and shipping everything himself. Most recently, he designed a quick-‘n’-easy line of stretched-out women’s T-shirts, emblazoned with Satanic pentagrams. When they weren’t being worn by just about every hipster, they were being shot by Terry Richardson for Purple magazine.

“But everyone’s doing T-shirts now,” was the reason why that venture also came to an end. “And I know I can do more, so why not?”

This time around, he’s being cautious. He’s produced a limited run on the men’s cigarette trousers, and sold it to just one store, Seven New York: “The idea is to see where the jeans take themselves.” When he’s informed that they’ve nearly sold out, he pauses for a minute. “Well then, I could use a salesgirl.”
