Lost In Translation
Ambien & Jager Just Don’t Mix for Adam Green

Perhaps best known for his song to Jessica Simpson, asking “Where Has Your Love Gone?” Adam Green earned a devout following by being endearingly irreverent and off-kilter. The floppy-haired New York native has made music since he was barely legal -- first playing in the band Moldy Peaches with best buddy Kimya Dawson at age 17.

In 2002, Green took the reins and went solo with his debut album, Garfield, followed by Friends of Mine in 2003, and Gemstones in 2005. He’s grown up since those pubescent, nasally days; weighing in now at 25, with chest hair, bravado and a fourth studio album entitled Jacket Full of Danger. Standout tracks like “Drugs,” “Novotel” and “Hairy Women” remind his audience that Green’s lyrical wit is intact.

The album’s release last month made an impression on fans, but what really stood out was Green’s recent tour through Europe, during which he wandered off the bus and was left stranded at a gas station in the middle of Europe. No one spoke English, and with no money or passport, he ended up having to hitchhike 7 hours to Lyon, France, where he was scheduled to play with The Strokes.

“I was wearing Old Navy snowman pajamas from Christmas, flip-flops and an army top. Inside my pocket, I had a flask of Jagermeister and a little box of miniature Cuban cigars. That’s all I had,” recalls Green. “I was set for the night though!”

Apparently, he had fallen into a deep trance from combining prescribed sleeping medication and drinking feverishly. He hoped to get much-needed rest while touring night after night; but instead, he developed a zombie-like existence: “I started to lose entire days of what was going on. I would play shows and forget the show, but knew I did it.”

No one knew that he’d walked off the tour bus, Jager in hand. He wandered around “the woods” until a bunch of kind French teenagers scooped him up and drove him to Lyon. In retrospect, the incident actually enlightened Green. “It reinforced something about me emotionally, knowing that I could hitchhike through Europe in my pajamas. It’s one of those weird survival techniques.”

The dust has settled now for Green. He’s back in New York with “plans to rest.” Soon, he’ll begin writing and recording another album: “That’s my favorite place to be,” he effuses. “In the studio. I’m just so happy when I’m there. I get really serious about it. I mean, I have slippers.”
