Kuntzel + Deygas Get Animated by Their Art

Pinpointing the professions of Paris-based duo Olivier Kuntzel and Florence Deygas is nearly impossible. Together they rightfully claim credit as graphic designers, directors, illustrators, authors, video creators, animators, and art directors. “We're impossible to define,” says Deygas.

They're a discreet design twosome -- a far cry from other fashionable couples that rank high on the list of talented French exports. Instead of making their presence known by hitting the party scene, vodka cocktails in hand, Kuntzel + Deygas are reviving design concepts for the vodka brands themselves.

Since meeting in 1988, when Kuntzel was already an established digital-image expert, and Deygas was on her way to making a mark within the 2-D animation field, their collaborations have evolved fast. Their creations -- which bear a quirky, slightly retro, purely optimistic sensibility -- range from object design (a Mi-Cha lamp based on a stylized cat shape), to character conception (Winney, an orange cow that has acquired international stardom), to music videos (St. Germain, Bertrand Burgalat and Dimitri from Paris). They've also created print campaigns and TV commercials for YSL Parfum, Nokia, Veuve Clicquot and Coca-Cola Japan, and a widely-acknowledged opening-credit sequence for Steven Spielberg's film “Catch Me If You Can.”

When asked of their happiest experience to date, both of them confess, “Each and every time we give life to creating a character.”

The creations continue, as Kuntzel + Deygas unleash more merchandise under the infamous Caperino + Peperone product line. To date, everything from iPod cases to Polaroid cameras have been emblazoned with the cheeky dogs, named after their two canine companions. And come mid-September, they will unveil the revamped website they art-directed for Parisian concept store Colette, which comes complete with a hyper-inventive navigational icon called Com-Pet -- a creation that mixes robotics with pet-like qualities. Quintessential Kuntzel + Deygas.
