What’s Beef?
Lethal B On Going Country (and Mixing Grime Rock With Pete Doherty)

You might not be aware of it, but a few years ago the U.K invented a form of music called Grime.  It started when two kids simultaneously banged their heads on a couple of saucepans in time to the bleeps from a broken Nintendo game. Actually, that never really happened, but that’s exactly what it used to sound like.  The sound has now advanced from ordinary saucepans to digital ones, and people like Dizzee Rascal and Lady Sovereign are kinda-semi-popular in the U.S.  But let’s go back a bit, to when a young man called Lethal B had the foresight to make a song called ‘Forward (POW!)’. It made the kids in the clubs wanna punch each other’s faces in.  It was probably the most popular grime song ever made.  Lethal also used to have a problem with a guy called Wiley. Wiley invented grime and taught Dizzee Rascal how to rap.  They used to talk about each other’s moms a lot, but apparently that’s all behind them now. We caught up with Lethal:

Do you still wanna kill Wiley?
Nah, we’re both grown men now, so it’s over.  There’ll always be something between us, because our clash was like Jay-Z and Nas, that’s why people always mention it, but I don’t wanna beat him up anymore.  There’s no money in it and it’s too time-consuming.

Some people said the whole beef situation between the two of you was staged…
What do you mean - like we were frontin’?

Yeah…
Nah, I can’t agree with that, man.  There were serious things happening behind closed doors that people don’t even know about.  It was all real.

We heard a rumour that you robbed him for his laptop that contained all his new songs…
Me? (Bursts out laughing) I jacked him for his laptop? Nah, nah, that wasn’t me, man.  I know who did it, but I don’t do that kind of stuff.

Actually, didn’t Wiley say he’s retired from grime now?
That’s bullshit.  I don’t believe that for one second. I think that’s just hype.  He can’t retire yet – he hasn’t made enough money.

I see.  But you’ve made a nice amount, right?  We heard you moved out the ghetto…
Yeah, I don’t live in the ‘hood any more.  You can’t be a superstar and live in the hood.  You just can’t.  I live in the countryside now, so I’m alright, but I had to learn the hard way.  People thought I was a millionaire and dickheads kept on hassling me and kept trying to bring me down.

Aren’t you one of the only grime artists that actually made his label money?
Well, I know Kano didn’t make his label any money on his last album.  The sales on my last album were much higher than what my label actual spent on promoting it.  They love me right now.  I’m being treated like 50 Cent

So your new album must be sounding pretty special then…
The new album is sounding big. There’s lots of different styles on there. I mixed grime with rock and did a song with Pete Doherty.  He was a really cool guy, even though the press chats a lot of shit about him.  I’ve also got a song with Lily Allen’s friend, Kate Nash.  The album should be out by the end of March, but look out for the video for my new track ‘Mister’, which should be out any day now.
