Your Ideal Body in 4-6 Weeks
Exercise Experts' Top Tips
Typically quick fixes aren’t such a good thing… unless you’re referring to fitness. Who can argue with the promise of a hot bod, obtained with little time and energy? Well, get used to it. The new trend in exercise and general health is the workout on speed. And, what better time to embrace it considering summer is arguably the easiest season to let oneself go (who needs a six-pack when you’ve got a killer tan and dewy skin)? Here, we’ve weighed in with some of the East and West Coast's leading trainers to find out: 1) What is the biggest no-no when it comes to fitness?
2) If you had to recommend one machine/workout to focus on what would it be?
3) What is the one piece of advice you would give people who’ve let themselves go all summer long and are looking to get in shape fast?
Tracy Anderson: Tinseltown’s trainer-of-choice, Anderson is a former dancer whose Pilates and aerobics-inspired workout has garnered fans like Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna. Anderson also offers personalized programs according to student’s muscle structure.1) The biggest no-no is often the type of exercise people are doing. People don’t understand how manipulative the muscles are. The type of exercise they choose greatly effects what they're going to physically look like.
2) Of course I believe in my method, which focuses on targeting the accessory muscles to pull in the large muscle groups and give you a tiny dancer body. I designed a machine called the "hybrid body reformer" - over 2,800 moves on the machine hit your muscles from all different angles and rotations. If you aren't able to come to my studio or do the cardio DVD, then the best advice I can give is to stay away from repetitive motions like running, lifting weights in conventional rotations, stair climbers, etc. A form of circuit training would be much better. I am a huge fan of cardio on the trampoline; it's more effective than running and is much better on your joints. Make a disk of your favorite songs for 40 minutes, get a mini-trampoline and jump like mad. Use your arms and dance on the trampoline. If you’re a woman never lift over 3 pounds.3) NEVER let yourself go. Working out is like brushing your teeth - you just do it. If you’ve let yourself go, you must start moving. Get really good at cardio; watch what you eat. Then, once you can do 40 minutes a day of cardio straight, you can eat what you want. While you are watching what you eat I, am a fan of milk or soymilk in the morning with berries. Chicken or turkey for lunch with cucumbers and tomatoes and grilled fish with brown rice and spinach for dinner for example. Then, you also need to deal with reengineering your muscular structure - some sit-ups with your legs out straight in front of you then lifting one foot at a time, lifting three-pound weights in many different ways. I love Grande Pliés in second position for your butt and legs.
Alex Reznik: A former fitness instructor for the Russian Army, NYC-based Reznik is the force behind Complete Body – an exercise program that has won over the likes of model Anne V, Valentino and Deepak Chopra. Reznik recently launched the six-week-long Fashion Week Ready Body program, which promises to get editors and ‘it’ girls alike ready for the front row.1) For health and food, the biggest no-no would be to starve yourself, which can ruin your metabolism and make long-term weight loss almost impossible. For fitness and exercise the biggest no-no is to over-exercise or not to get rest, which could cause injuries not allowing you to exercise for months.
2) This has to be custom-made to each person’s goals and level of fitness, so I would recommend focusing on a machine or workout that a person enjoys, or that they don’t dislike, because in this case clients will continue their workouts and have positive emotions as a result.
3) I would focus on one’s diet – small meals more often, and less at night – and, again, find an exercise or physical activity you enjoy.
Ulises (You-Lee) Rodriguez: This former music producer and engineer is now a certified NYC-based trainer who specializes in kettlebell, an ancient strength-training technique, and Indo Board. In addition to working at the renowned Peak Performance gym in Manhattan, Rodriguez is available for independent private training sessions.1) There are a lot of big no-no’s but the main thing is not to let your lower back go. Train your core - your core runs the whole show.
2) It would not be any machine. Machines will hurt you, not help you. I use a lot of kettlebell, which is an ancient Russian exercise. I do kettlebell while balancing on my Indo Board, which teaches you cardiovascular balance. Everybody knows me, and knows I do crazy stuff. A lot of people don’t implement this kind of training.
3) If you do it sloppy, you’re going to look sloppy. And, get a trainer. A lot of people think, “Oh, I don’t need a trainer.” Michael Jordan has six NBA rings and he had a trainer for every different part of his body. Also, you don’t need a gym. 85-90% of people who have gym memberships don’t use them. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
