BROOKLYN Cold War Kids

On October 27th, Cold War Kids’ sold-out-ticket holders gathered for a “Give Me Liberty or Give me Death” performance at Brooklyn’s intimate venue, Union Hall. When band members Matt Aveiro, Matt Maust, Jonnie Russell and Nathan Willett hit the stage, by the looks of them, you’d assume they lived in nearby hipster-central Williamsburg. However, this foursome are straight outta Long Beach, California, with music that warrants Blues undertones and rock 'n’ roll bravado. (Imagine if Led Zeppelin were off-kilter nerds, and Robert Plant's voice sounded more like Jeff Buckley.) Screams penetrated loudly when the anthem-piano-driven “Hospital Beds” slowly crept into Union Halls’ soundscape, blowing up from lead singer Willett’s sweat-pouring face. Though, the crowd-favorite closing song, “Hang Me Up To Dry,” proved that Cold War Kids have vindicated their mainstay.
