NYC El Perro Del Mar

Hidden from the pouring rain and tucked tightly into the Mercury Lounge, a small crowd watched in awe as Gothenburg, Sweden’s latest export, flexed its vocal cords. A timid El Perro Del Mar, pseudonym for Sarah Assbring, took the stage, fluttering between innocuous pop anthems and fervent melancholic ballads (think Julee Cruise with a touch of Dusty Springfield). Fresh off the release of her self-titled debut album, and backed by a three-piece band as tight as their skinny black suits, El Perro Del Mar swept the audience away with her captivating crooning. “When you come, bring the sun,” she sings in the track Loneliness. And, despite the weather and the hour, it felt as though she did.
