BROOKLYN The Grates

Aussie darlings The Grates flipped Brooklyn upside-down in support of their release Gravity Won't Get You High at Northsix the other night. Not that the laws of gravity apply to lead singer Patience Hodgson -- she seems more at home in the air than with both feet on the ground. It's no coincidence then that the band ripped into 'Trampoline’ as their opener. The straight-outta-Brisbane trio unleashed a one-two-punch set of defiantly perky garage rock on an eager audience, and it was spectacular. Guitarist John Patterson supplied the Punk Y-chromosome to the mix, backed up by the unrelenting drumming of Alana Skyring. Many were caught off-guard by Patience hopping into the crowd and physically pushing people back mid-set; but a few were secretly hoping she would do her patented rhythmic ribbon-dance. Sure enough, she unfurled a lavender banner while belting out 'Rock Boys' in the center of the crowd. "So you’re all pregnant," chirped Patience as she clamored back on stage. "But we're gonna have the most beautiful children together, and they're gonna have wicked accents."
