NYC Girl Talk

It's the stuff graphic-novel dreams are made of: a mild-mannered biochemist known simply as Greg Gillis by day, master of frenzied dance-floor ceremonies by night. The superhero in question: none other than Pittsburgh's Girl Talk, who happily obliged the crowd by ripping his shirt off mid-set at Studio B in support of his album Night Ripper. Call him what you want -- laptop gigger, co-dependent sampler, or the best thing to happen to the mash-up since Hollertronix -- Girl Talk's inaugural Brooklyn show sold out weeks in advance.
Not content by simply blending a few tracks, Gillis joyously strings the best 20-second clips of guilty pleasure tunes together (thereby barley escaping copyright infringement). Girl Talk commands attention simply hunched over his computer center stage. Gazing intently at his screen, the gleeful anticipation over what unconventional combo to unfurl next is infectious and kept the audience at a boiling point for over an hour. Fans’ devotion is spurred further by his propensity to stage-dive mid-track, hurl confetti and insist that fans join him on-stage for the entire set.
We could have done without the booty base blending into the Dawson's Creek song, but we’re not sure anyone noticed due to the fever pitch. By the end of the night we’d been stockpiled 4 people deep (sooo 1994), and more than one friend lost a shoe in the mayhem. One thing is clear -- this DJ has no brakes.
