NYC Fujiya & Miyagi

Fujiya & Miyagi make undeniably sexy music out of unlikely variables. Take a bass line that smacks you across the face, combined with Kraut-rock worthy beeps and blips, as unfurled by a low-key trio of UK musicians that could pass as footballers off-season. And no, they're not Japanese: Steve "Fujiya" Lewis is the purveyor of looping beats and keys, while Dave "Miyagi" Best breathes lyrics down the back of your neck. There would be no band without an ampersand to tie it together, and bassist Matt "&" Hainsby obliges to complete the equation of Prince meeting Jane Birkin.

The announcement that the boys from Brighton would be gigging at the Seaport left us scrambling south of Canal Street on a recent humid evening. Fujiya & Miyagi hypnotized their audience, and squeals of anticipation interrupted the opening bars of 'Ankle Injuries.' Their subtle delivery and slightly stiff upper body choreography is inherently attractive, like they’re navigating the tricky playground dynamics of a first crush. 'Collarbone' got everyone hot and bothered, and before the bassline of 'In One Ear & Out the Other' had fully kicked in, the crowd was a giant undulating mass. We can't think of a better way to spend a sweltering summer night here in the city, and our fogged up sunglasses are proof that everyone had a sexy good time.
